According to the American Medical Association, serious injuries to the spinal cord are included in its definition of catastrophic injuries. They’re debilitating injuries that result in severe functional disability. In the construction industry, they most often occur as a result of falls from heights and accidents involving heavy equipment. These types of injuries often result in damage to the spinal cord that is presently impossible to repair. That means there will be a likelihood of the permanent loss of sensation and movement in the arms, legs or both.
A spinal cord tear can be incomplete or complete. An incomplete tear involves only partial severing of the cord. With a complete tear, the spinal cord is severed into two separate pieces. Partial tears result in paraplegia. Complete tears result in quadriplegia. Paraplegia involves the partial or complete loss of feeling and movement of the legs. Quadriplegia involves complete loss of feeling and movement for the entire body below the location of the complete tear.
Drastic changes are in order for paraplegics and quadriplegics. Both conditions will require use of a wheelchair, and tasks that were previously routine before the spinal cord injury are now impossible to perform. Medical procedures, therapy and health care assistance will likely be required for the rest of the spinal cord injury victim’s life. The costs of those will be overwhelming. The victim can also suffer a shortened life expectancy.
